I really enjoyed this album and it has a great selection of songs. The one thing that would have made this album perfect for me was if Here is Gone was included on this album.

Music: 4 stars; Compilation: 2 stars; New relevance: 3 stars

The Goo Goo Dolls'' most recent studio album was last year''s disastrous "It''s Christmas All Over", easily the worst of the Goos'' 13 studio albums released in their 30+ year career. The guys must''ve realized that indeed something wasn''t quite right and in early 2021, they released the well-received "EP 21", a 4 track acoustic collection. Now only months later comes already a new compilation. Let''s take a closer look.

"Rarities" (20 tracks; 69 min.) is perhaps technically a collection of "previously rare or unreleased" tracks, but frankly that is a very misleading album title. There are in reality 3 songs that will be of particular interest to Goos fans: the album opening "Hit Or Miss" is a hard rocking tune from an import EP called "Only One". Track 2 is an even better (and also hard-charging) "Nothing Can Change You" (1st radio single). The album''s closing track is the 1 min. "Take Me Out To the Ball Game", yes the baseball tune. It''s a novelty but it actually sounds quite nice! The remaining 17 tracks are all well-known songs, many of them hits, brought in one of these 4 categories: two remixed tracks, eighth live tracks, four acoustic tracks, and three live acoustic tracks. No, I mean for real! For example, why include "Don''t Change" (3rd radio single) in this live version, when we already got this as a bonus track on the 20th anniversary deluxe edition of "A Boy Named Goo"? And why add not one but two versions of "Naked" (a remix version and a live version). And do you really need yet another "Name" (live acoustic), or "Iris" (acoustic)? Does this approach make this compilation a "bad" one? No of course not, as there is quite a good amount of pleasant, at times even great, music on here. But to call this rehash of mostly prior hits and album cuts a "rarities" release reeks of a money-grab by Warner Bros., to be honest.

If you are truly in the mood for some more obscure stuff from the Goos, check out instead the 2008 compilation "Vol. 2" (22 tracks; 79 min.), a truly delicious offering of previously unreleased tracks, b-sides, rarities, new covers, and live performances (it is of course the companion to the 2007 release "Greatest Hits Volume One: The Singles"). I''ve seen the Goos many, many times over the decades, including a legendary triple header in Dayton, OH in early 1996, where a then-unknown No Doubt opened, then came the Goos (just as "Name" was breaking big), and headlined by Bush (just as their debut album was exploding). What an evening of music that was! The Goos were supposed to come to southwest Ohio (where I live) this summer, but sadly the tour has been pushed back to 2022 (not sure why since all last remaining COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Ohio since early June). As for "Rarities": buyer beware, there are better options out there.

First off, I like this collection, my pal Matt Pinfield did the cool liner notes, I like how it mops up odds & ends, but I have a coupla issues, small & big. The small one is they misspell powerpop master Tommy Keene''s name (RIP)...it''s KEENE, not KeAne, misspelled in both the credits AND in Matt''s well-intentioned fan-centric writing...like him, I discovered the band in 1990 with "Hold Me Up" based on a cool, got-me-curious, review in Spin magazine, and I''ve been pretty loyal ever since...

The big one is the remix of "Naked"...according to the credits, it was originally on the "Dizzy" EP in Japan...not sure if it''s the same version that was on a promo US CD single & on the great 2000 collection "What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art & Commerce", but it started just like it, but the big issue was that (on the radio remix), towards the end of the track, the music cuts out & you have Johnny doing an acappella verse...then it goes to a full band chorus...HERE on "Rarities", in that very spot, you don''t get Johnny acapella, nope...you get full-on SILENCE!!! You don''t know if the track ends early or if that is the way it''s supposed to be...but I think it''s a HUGE ERROR!!

Very happy I still have "Ego"...I''m curious which is correct...Johnny acappella on "Naked" (Remix) or silence in that spot?? Record company manufacturing error or the way it''s supposed to be?? Feedback would be appreciated...

There was also a song that shoulda been included, the 1 song they replaced on the 1995 officially-released "Boy Named Goo" with the 2 covers at the end, but I think I know why...it was written by their departed/fired drummer, and they didn''t want to give him any royalties...nothing against Johnny & Robbie, totally understandable, but it was a good song regardless...the only way to get it is find an advanced promo CD with a plain white back cover & no front cover...I know, I used to have one...

Otherwise, all good...

This covers the bands career, with a variety of b sides and other song versions. The vinyl sounds great and a well done package. Some of the songs are okay, as they are live or an older version. But, great to add to the collection.
